Acura Collision Mitigation Braking System

Acura Collision Mitigation Braking System | Acura of Oakville

Acura Collision Mitigation Braking System

Acura is more than a luxury car. Acura's are designed, built, and tested to ensure only the highest quality and most advanced safety features on the road today are used to protect you and your loved ones. At Acura of Oakville, we believe it is equally, if not more so, important to consider the safety features available in your new car search along with all other options and features. Let's take a closer look at what the Collision Mitigation Braking System is and how exactly it works inside our Acura vehicles.

What Is Acura Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS)?

CMBS is a radar-based self-directed emergency braking system found in the AcuraWatch Package. To help reduce the likelihood or severity of a frontal impact, the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) uses both a radar system and a high-resolution forward camera to recognize hazards such as vehicles or pedestrians. The system can use up to 80% of full braking power to avoid or reduce impact with a detected object.

How Does The Acura Collision Mitigation Braking System Work?

CMBS uses a front-mounted camera and radar to monitor traffic conditions ahead. If the vehicle in front of you suddenly stops, or a pedestrian is detected in the vehicle's path, CMBS alerts the driver. The CMBS system has 3 alert stages. Depending on the circumstances or CMBS settings, all stages may not occur before initiating the last stage.

Stage 1: When the initial risk of collision is detected, CMBS issues an audible and visual warning, prompting the driver to take corrective action.

Stage 2: If the driver does not take action, allowing the distance between the front of the vehicle and the object detected to shorten, CMBS continues the audible and visual warnings while lightly applying brake pressure. This stage provides sensory warnings alerting the driver to take corrective action.

Stage 3: If the driver has not taken action and a collision is imminent, CMBS continues the audible and visual alerts and strongly applies brake pressure to help the driver avoid the collision. When this stage is initiated, CMBS tightens the front seat occupants' seatbelts to prepare for a possible collision.

What Are The Benefits of Acura's Collision Mitigation Braking System?

Let's face facts, accidents happen. Acura owners can drive more confidently knowing AcuraWatch technologies and CBMS has an extra set of never-blinking eyes on the road. This system is designed to help prevent rear-end collisions with vehicles that are stationary or travelling in the same direction and pedestrians, by immediately alerting the driver of a potential crash object. It is important, however, to keep in mind even though the goal of the CMBS system is to alert the driver to apply the brakes, it is not alone expected to brake the vehicle sufficiently to avoid all collisions.
