What's the Fastest Way to De-Ice Your Windshield?
What's the Fastest Way to De-Ice Your Windshield?
Here in Canada, we all know how cold it can get during the winter months. That frustrating feeling of waking up in the morning to go to work and getting to the driveway to see your car is frozen over with a thick layer of ice. Here at Acura of Oakville, we want to give you a solution to this problem, so you never have to fuss over the snow and ice layered on your car, scraping away every inch of it and making you cold and late for work.
Make or Buy a De-Icer Spray
De-icer sprays are readily available at many automotive and hardware stores; but it's just as easy to make them yourself. There are two options, you can mix two parts 70% isopropyl alcohol with one part water, or you can mix a spray bottle of water with a few teaspoons of table salt. Both sprays work to melt and loosen the ice so that it's easier to scrape right off. Make sure not to over-spray the de-icer, just enough for the ice to start melting. To speed up this process even further, you can start your car and turn on your windshield defroster from the inside.
What Not to do When De-Icing Your Windshield
Do not pour hot water on your windshield. Although it may seem like the quickest solution, the extreme change in temperature from freezing cold to burning hot can cause your windshield to crack, leading to an expensive trip to the repair shop.
Do not scrape or hit your windshield to try to get the ice off. Remember, your windshield is made of glass, and glass is fragile. Although your windshield is reinforced, it is still prone to scratches and scrapes.
